God’s Name – When Does it Work?
Jeremiah 14:1-15:9

Intro    Never presume on God’s goodness

1.    The Drought (14: 1-6)

A severe drought hits Judah and everyone is affected

2.    The Presumption (14: 7-9)

a.    There seems to be a confession (vs 7a, c)
b.    They appeal on God’s name (vs 7b, 9c)
c.    They exalt God’s power (vs 8a)
d.    They dishonor God with their questioning (vs 8b-9a)

 What’s missing?
 Genuine repentance (Psa. 51:17, 34:18: Isa. 66:1-2; 2 Chron. 7:14)

3.    The Rejection and Judgment (14: 10-16)

 God’s response is …
a.    Different – discipline (vs 10; Heb 12:6, Prov 3:12)
b.    Rejection of religious ‘doings’ (vs 11-12a; Amos 5:21-22)
c.    God declares judgment (vs 12b)
Concluding Thoughts:
o    God hates hypocrisy; God loves a genuine heart!
o    God’s name works!   It works for salvation (Acts 4:12, 2:21, 36-38)
Is powerful and worthy of worship (Phil 2: 10-11, Prov 18:10)
Gives our prayers   (John 14:13-14, I John 5:14-15)

4.    The Lament (14: 17-18)
5.    The Surprise (15:1-9)
