Yahweh
is Unique
Jeremiah 10
Intro: Is Christianity the best among many
choices?
1. Israel’s sin
was idolatry – the slippage to idolatry begins with a fascination
of the world, which leads to imitation (vs 1-5)
a) They were
warned of the danger (vs 1; Deut 4:12-19, Rom 12:2)
b) The shallowness of idolatry – it is like vapor
(3a); creation of man (3b); decorated and lifeless (vs 4,
5b); incommunicable (5a); absolutely no need to fear them
(5c)
2. The character
and ability of God is the reason God is worthy to be worshipped
and is sufficient (vs 6-22)
a) Our God is incomparable
(vs 6a; Ex 15:11)
b) The richness of allegiance to Yahweh – He isgreat (6b; Psalm 86:8); His name is powerful (6c; Prov
18:11, Acts 2:38, 3:6, Phil. 2:10); we absolutely need to fear God (7; cf. Gen 22:12, Job 1:9); He is true andliving (vs 10a); God has emotions – wrath (10b); His power
and wisdom created the universe (vs 12); when God speaks – thingshappen (vs 13).
3. Our expected
response is – submission (vs 23-25)
Two
requirements for surrender …
a) A realistic view of self (vs 23, vs
8, 14; cf. Rom 12:3)
b) A high view of God’s justice
(vs 24; cf. 10b; Jer. 30:11, Ps. 6:1)
Conclusion: Do you fear God?
